Course Overview
Shiatsu is a well known but often poorly understood therapy by some massage therapists. Incorporating shiatsu techniques into massage therapy is within the scope of practice for massage therapists and will enhance their practice.
The distinguishing feature of the certificate program is the focus on clinical treatment protocols for common conditions, based on a solid theoretical and practical foundation. The curriculum is premised on the state standard adopted from China, by western licensing bodies for regulatory approval.
The certificate course consists of two levels, running from September to June.
The 16 and 7 hour Introductory Courses are intended to present an overview of shiatsu massage as it will be delivered in the full program in it’s theoretical, practical and clinical components.
A key aspect of shiatsu is the management of energy (Qi), with-in the patient, which is directed by the practitioner. Therefore success relies on the practitioners abilities in personal energy management.
“Qi Gong”, a component of this program, is a practice of breathing and stretching which builds energy and develops a keen awareness of body mind and spirit.
When the practitioner recognizes positive balanced energy within himself/herself, it is then possible to identify negative patterns and harmonize them appropriately, using the techniques learned in this course.
Because shiatsu requires no oils or lubricants, it can be administered according to a variety of patient preferences including, through light clothing, thin sheets, or directly to the skin, with or without oils.
